Owner of Guildford dog boarding service Wagging Tails Gaynor Austin with her dog Felix

I grew up with a succession of doggy playmates and companions; from an Alsatian to a Bassett Hound, from a Corgi to a Red-setter, and my favourite, a good old Heinz 57 named Roxy. Naturally, as an adult I was keen to continue the tradition with a dog of my very own. This turned out to be two dogs: Yorkshire Terriers called Molly and Brandy. Only then did I realise how restrictive dog ownership could be. No more impromptu overnight stays or impulsive weekends away. Even a holiday planned well in advance came with the added stress of, ‘where are my babies going to stay?’ Of course, kennels were out of the question: How would they cope in a barren kennel, with the strange sounds of other dogs all around and no human lap to curl up on? So we restricted ourselves to visiting family and the occasional hotel which accepted pets.

When the opportunity to visit California came along we decided to accept the kind offer of a dogless friend to look after ‘the girls’. We had a lovely holiday, but returned to a very nervous looking friend. One day she had answered a knock at the front door only to find a total stranger holding Molly, who had escaped the back garden and miraculously navigated a main road, before being rescued by the Good Samaritan on the doorstep. Needless to say, that was the first and last time we left the dogs with a friend.

I’m glad to say that Molly and Brandy lived long and happy lives with us for almost 20 years. My two human daughters were in their teens, and teaching in a local primary school kept me busy. But, as time went on, I found myself ‘broody’, not for another baby, but another dog! Full time teaching left little time for caring for a dog. So, it was while researching the possibility of a more dog-friendly working arrangement that I came across Wagging Tails. My first thought was, ‘why weren’t they around when I had the Yorkies?’

A few months later and I am now the proud owner of the GU franchise. I have inherited a fantastic group of carers, who give all the dogs who come into their homes an abundance of love and attention. I can’t wait to add to that team in order to enable more and more owners to experience the peace of mind enjoyed by knowing that your canine family member is enjoying their own, special holiday in the safety of a Wagging Tails home.

And, oh yes, I am now also the proud owner a very handsome Battersea pup, named Felix. A real Wagging Tails dog!

I am also fully insured with Third Party Liability Insurance from Pet Business Insurance.

About Our Carers

All our carers are experienced past dog owners who sadly no longer have dogs of their own or have one dog who enjoys the company of visitng dogs. Coming from various walks of life and experienced with different breeds of dogs they have all been vetted, interviewed and assessed and I would happily board Felix with each of them. Where necessary our carers are licensed by their local Council to comply with the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 and are fully insured through Wagging Tails Pet Business Insurance. I match each owner's dogs with the most suitable carers and insist on a 'sniffing out meeting' taking place at the carers home before the board. I believe it is very important for owners to meet the chosen carer to gain peace of mind and feel confident their best friend will have a great holiday! I always aim to place dogs back with the same carer for subsequent holidays as the dogs and carers build a strong bond. Many owners have told me their dogs have dragged them to the carers door knowing exactly where they are and that it's holiday time!
